Tipster of the Week: A Pinhole That Is Faster than You Think!

Today, we attempt to look back and retrace the basic foundation of what gave us Lomographers the sole purpose to exist - that is to capture the light with a pinhole. Join us as we pay homage to this very simplistic method of image making with our week's selected Tipster!

Do Your Pinhole Larger by wuxiong

I believe that there are a bunch of Lomographers out there have a passion for pinhole photos, like myself. However I am a bit lazy guy who don’t like carry an extra weight of a tripod while going out to shoot. So I figured it out with this idea – that if I make a larger pinhole, so I can always shoot handheld, without having to sit my camera on a tripod or something rock steady.

OK, to begin with , you first have to unscrew your beloved Holga lens ( either 120 or 135 model would do). Then find and cut a thin aluminum foil sheet, make a hole in the center with a nail, instead of a usual sewing needle, then stick it on to the square hole of your Holga body, and its done.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Turn the lens on its “one person” distance icon printed on the lens barrel, until it stops. Here you need some courage and strength to turn a bit more harder, way past that icon. You will hear a loud crack sound. Don’t be afraid. From my several previous try, I can safely assure you that it will do no harm to your camera or lens.

2: Speed. Since your nailhole is large, about 1mm in width, just set the shutter at B. You don’t have to be accurate at all, but approximately somewhere between 1 sec to 1/100 sec. is already enough for exposure.

Anyway, your Holga is always smarter than I can tell you, and it is always so forgiving no matter what you done to it. :)

Before you load film unscrew the 2 screws holding the lens on then take that front piece off and unscrew the screw that stops the lens from spinning and you won't have to crack the plastic. Search for holgamods for illustrations because I doubt I am being clear enough here. It takes about 2 minutes total once you know what to do.

@wuxiong: The "written by" at the very top shows the person on the staff of Lomography.com who posted the tipster to the on-line magazine. Underneath the picture you see "Do Your Pinhole Larger by wuxiong", so the staffer does give you credit for the article. I know it's confusing. They should change the way this works.

    Nice job on the tipster.

To lomosexual_manboy: Yes your suggestion is perfect. However you need a very tiny screw to unscrew the front part of the lens base. That is still a bit troublesome for me lazy guys. The "crack way" takes only exactly ONE second.. Hahahaha....
