Use a B setting and a Colorsplash flash to make yourself a two-face, son!
It took me a lot of time and many rolls of film to figure this tip out—now it is an easy tip, like so easy, but I am gonna give crazy details so you don’t waste films like me. So what I used in these is a camera with a B setting, a lockable cable release, a Ringflash, a Colorsplash flash, a strobe flash, and a clamping tripod. However all you really need to do this is a Colorsplash flash, everything else can be accomplished with duct tape!
Try to imagine the following: you need to put the camera on a flat surface at eye level, put it on the B setting, make the room dark and then press the shutter down and keep it down, which is where the cable release or duct tape comes into play. Alright so if your face is a clock and you are looking at the camera at 12 o’clock and the back of your head is 6 o’clock and your right ear is 3 and your left ear is 6. Now, with the shutter open and the room dark you hold a flash in arms length away from you at about 1pm and make it flash, then switch hands and flash the flash again at 11—- that is the basic premise.
But you can get crazy as hell with this idea just with some very simple whacky behavior and/or props. So you have plenty of time to change colors on the flash, outfits, or expressions. It is almost like having a splitzer when you don’t have one because what shows up is the areas of your face that you flash upon. So you can have a two-face that involves two different colors or one face with a hat and one face with a visor or one face that smiles while the other half frowns. Turning your face slightly between flashes can also give a Quasimodo type look, either way it can all be super fun and either cute or wacky or creepy as hell—-it kinda gives me a semi.
