Tipster of the Week: Brightness Beyond the Hotshoe

It's that time again when days get shorter and nights grow longer than the usual, but this didn’t affect our beloved Tipster here! In fact he thought of something that will resurrect one of his Lomo tool into something really useful and will give you brilliant effects, guranteed!

Extended Flash by mattcharnock

Fed up with uncreative flashing? With the flash always from the same place? From the same direction? ME TOO! Well – not any more my friends!

My beloved Colorsplash Flash has slowly been dieing. It’s well used but not well treated. I decided to fix it. I opened it up and was hit by an idea. Couldn’t it be possible to extend the wires and have a flash I could put in different places thus giving me a greater creativity over shot?

I grabbed some wire, a pen knife and a soldering thingy. I used the saw blade on my knife and cut the foot out. This was still going to sit on the hot shoe. If you have ever touched the power source of a flash you will know that it gives an almighty kick, so I decided that I needed to cover the electric terminals to make it safe. I took an empty film canister and cut it in about half. I then cut the lid of the canister so that hot shoe fitted in. This was then glued into position. I made a hole in the top of the canister for the wire to go through and put it back on the lid. I used the section of canister that was left to make a patch for the body of the flash.

I then got to the electrics!

The wire was from an old phone charger that no longer worked, so I kept it the length that it was and soldered (is that the right word?) to the various points needed. Taped it all up and fitted it to my Minolta Hi-matic 5, it didn’t work. My Minolta decided at that very moment to die. So I fitted it to my trusty Olympus Trip 35 and she worked like a dream!

If you don't want to cut a perfectly good flash up, you can buy hotshoe/pc adaptors and a long sync cord get off camera flash that way.

This is funny, universe is synchronized ;-) I did somewhat this a few days ago, although I only have it connected to the diana mini trigger for now. http://www.flickr.com/photos/41667064@N02/sets/72157622948994620/ Cheers!
