Holga CFN - How I Hate to Love You.....Your Flash That Is!
written by the_fstops_here on December 27th, 2008 , 6 comments (5 votes)

The Holga Affair – we’re all a part of it, we love this blocky plastic camera. With each new model we awe and drool a bit and find new ways to explore our creativity. With the Holga CFN we experience new ways to blend color into our night shots and get gitty at the chance to prowl the night searching for new objects and people to shoot. If you have this camera you may have noticed that without the 6×4.5 mask the batteries which power the flash have a problem of falling out of place. I tried tape (the same electrical tape I use to decorate my Holga) but the heat of summer and the bumps and turns while riding my bike around town caused the batteries to get loose and fall out of place. I even spent a few times in the pub with the camera under my shirt trying to resituate the batteries into place without exposing the film to any light. The main problem besides the flash not working was the tape and or batteries would get in the way and block part of your film from being exposed.

It took a few rolls of film and many inappropriate phrases to figure out a remedy to this problem. I took a few long but small sheets of aluminum (or aluminium for non-US people) foil and folded them into small 4×4cm squares that are quite thick and put them at the ends of the batteries to hold them in place between the connection. And like magic the batteries have never moved and I’ve gone through 20 rolls of film!!! Some of you may know this trick already but I thought I’d share my success with anyone who has had the batteries or pieces of tape get in the way of their photos or shouted $%&! because they missed the perfect shot in low light.

Hey man! Thank you very much for this post! I wasn´t using my holga since the flash gone wrong, and I tried what you said. Didn´t work first, the flash charge but didn´t flash. Then I opened the lens and saw the little iron thing that makes the contact was stuck. I move that, and now I have a holga with flash again! Thanks to this encouraging post. A+

Fantastic, i've been trying to solve this problem for a long time. Gonna try it out asap. But i'm thinking, does'nt it increase the charging time of the flash?

    Thanks a lot
