It used to be Quinta do Lorido (Lorido Farm) a well-know Portuguese wine producers but Comendador José Berardo re-designed it with a new oriental concept in response to the destruction of the Giant Bamyan Buddhas in 2001, sculpted in the rocks of the valley of Bamyan in central Afghanistan and which had for centuries been a cultural and spiritual reference.

The same architecture firm that designed the New York Public Library designed the building, and the list of patrons who have stayed in the hotel are just as famous. “Presidents, writers, and celebrities (including The Rolling Stones, Dolly Parton, Henry James, and Elvis Presley) have all stayed in the Jefferson.” (www.wikipedia.com)
