I was ecstatic to find an old Fed 3 going cheap in a thrift store. Some real Soviet-era heavy metal for my collection of cameras. It looked great. Nice clear lens, shiny chrome bits, and everything seemed to move as it should. So I bought it and took it home.

My family in Ukraine knows that I love soviet cameras and sent me a Fed 2

Strikingly modern architecture colliding with heavy brickwork from 1906 on the Copenhagen waterfront. There's a cafe, a concert hall, and The National Museum of Photography. And of course there are books too!

This little baby cost me $25 on ebay. It's a great almost-point-and-shoot camera for lower speed films, and a fantastic alternative to an LC-A if the $100-$250 is a little steep for you. It's a little larger than an LC-A, but the freedom of the battery-less selenium light meter more than makes up for that!

It is claimed that after we have World War 3 the only things that will survive are cockroaches, I am inclined to disagree. I believe that the other thing that will survive a nuclear war is: The Fed 3.

Pros: it is sexy! Cons: it may scratch your glasses... :-( The first time a FED-1 is in your hands you only can say: “Wow!”. It’s heavy, is cool, is nice, is perfect…

I got one myself in a flea market but to be honest the seller is so scary. He is so tall and got some cool tattoos in his big hand. No I'm not gonna review the seller of this Fed 2 Type 3 and I got the maroon edition. All my friends says the brown is from the blood and I think they're so wrong! This Russian jewel is so lovely and the Industar lens makes the image so old and crisp yet still have that russian mood going on.

For precision photography with a stand-out, old-school vibe, pick up a FED 5. That's if you have the tenacity, patience and some brawn to tame its hefty body and finicky character.
