Whenever I go to a beach I never just lie down and start tanning. I get bored. I go and wander about exploring. In Scotland, tanning is very rarely an option; if we had sun all year round I might be content to just lie in the heat. When I’m at a beach I love the sound of the sea and the feel of the sand. You’ve got a film camera; you’re shooting loads and costs are starting to mount up. I know that story. I’ve been there myself. I understand how you feel, because I felt that way when I was paying £20 for b/w dev, prints and scan per roll. I found that developing and scanning my own negatives not only cut out way more than half the cost – it taught me more about photography to boot.

Sometime mid-last year, I decided to test out my first roll of black & white film ever. A little shaky, hesitant, and worried, I later loosened up to the way b&w could possibly create a completely different perspective that I had been missing out on by relying upon color.

To me there's no doubt about it: the best things in life are analogue. Although online messages, digital cameras and an mp3 player do have its advantages, nothing beats the good ol' analogue world. What painter Bob Ross said about painting also applies to everything analogue: "We don't have mistakes here, we just have happy accidents."
