  It's that time of the year again when, on any given Friday or Saturday night in October, anywhere around the world, you could stumble upon a lederhosen clad lad and a dirndl dressed lass. Luckily, my birthday is also in October so last year, we were able to combine the two in my hometown on the Central Coast of Australia having a big Oktoberfest celebration.

  Bay Harbour Market, truly organic and creative! I heard a lot about The Old Biscuit Mill Market of Cape Town, but I was glad we went to Bay Harbour Market instead. It truly has a community spirit and a very relaxed atmosphere, with almost no tourists at all.

• De Hems Dutch Pub

  
  The first time I went to this pub was during the World Congress in 2007. A group of us were wandering around the Chinatown/SoHo area after the day's festivities and stumbled upon it after being disappointed that so many places closed early. De Hems is open until midnight all days of the week save for Sunday. What a happy surprise as this is a wonderful pub.

• The Carnival of New Year!

  
  Why is it that we celebrate the New Year so? People put on silly hats, drink, dance, sing and party like it's 1999. This kind of carnival is celebrated mainly on the turnover of the new year on the calendar but in some cultures it is celebrated on different days. One thing is for sure, you can capture great photos at this carnival wherever you are in the world!

  [Asset:190266] Since the 16th Century, the ever-sociable Sevillanos have been enjoying a stroll, or paseo, in the wide, tree lined promenade called the Alameda de Hercules. In the four hundred and some years it has existed, the Alameda has been everything from a fashionable meeting place for the upper classes to a run down area with drug and prostitution problems. Now it's one of the busiest, liveliest and most funky places in the city.
