I admit it, me and my Smena 8M haven't always been best friends. I tried a couple of Smenas, each one with a different problem. But then, one decisive moment came. I went surfing to Basque country and the rest is history.

Warhol may have been an East Coast native but art brought him to sunny California once upon a time. Shot in 16mm color film, "San Diego Surf" was left unfinished due to injuries after his attempted murder but recently completed by his co-director Paul Morrissey. For many years Burleigh Beach has been a go-to spot for my family in the state of Queensland, Australia. With wide open spaces away from the more tourist-ladden beaches of the Gold Coast, this spot is a favourite of surfers to the south, near the open waters at the heads, and popular with local families and exercise buffs to the north.

Shelly Beach is a long stretch of beach on the NSW Central Coast, Australia. It has golden sand and a safe, sheltered area for families and people who just want to take a dip in the ocean, and in the open northern end, you will see many surfers and bodyboarders out. I was lucky enough to grow up only 5 minutes away from this beach and have many great memories of it.

One word: Gelati. Two words: Mango Gelati. Three words: Best when cold. Four words: I want one now! In my opinion, Jacksonville Beach isn't family friendly. Too many college age and homeless bums hang out at this beach. There are so many cigarette buds on the ground. My fear is that I'll step on broken beer glass in the sand. And a friend of a friend almost got raped while out jogging in the morning. I avoid it.

Whenever I go to a beach I never just lie down and start tanning. I get bored. I go and wander about exploring. In Scotland, tanning is very rarely an option; if we had sun all year round I might be content to just lie in the heat. When I’m at a beach I love the sound of the sea and the feel of the sand. Here are some interesting shorelines I’ve been to and the sorts of things I’ve seen.

A small tourist beach in the so-called “Ruta del Sol” (sun route) in Ecuador. It is about 2.5 hours away by bus from Guayaquil, the second biggest city, which is also considered as the "industrial capital". It is a great place to rest, unplug yourself from hectic life in the city, and enjoy the bohemian vibe it sends out.
