Whenever I go to a beach I never just lie down and start tanning. I get bored. I go and wander about exploring. In Scotland, tanning is very rarely an option; if we had sun all year round I might be content to just lie in the heat. When I’m at a beach I love the sound of the sea and the feel of the sand. Here are some interesting shorelines I’ve been to and the sorts of things I’ve seen.

The Atlantic Sea plays a very important role in Portugal’s history and culture. In Minho, the pleasant weather and aged villages result in the perfect combination. The moment I return to my country, this is the city that I want to live in: Viana do Castelo.

Before I went there, I heard that it was supposed to be the "Maldives of Thailand", and true enough, when we finally arrived, Koh Payam was an absolute delight - and more! Read more about our adventures after the jump!

Motuihe Island lies between Motutapu and Waiheke islands in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, near Auckland. It's remote, uninhabited, and in summertime, a wonderful place to visit to get away from the city.

Back in November I took a short break to my aunt and uncle's beach hut on the North Somerset coast. Dunster Beach and the nearby Exmoor National Park provided the backdrop for a weekend of enthusiastic photography.

Due to low funds, one summer we wanted to stay inside the UK for our holidays and Lyme Regis was the place we decided on! We timed our trip to Lyme Regis perfectly. The sun made an appearance for most of the week and we were just in time for the local regatta. The locals had arranged various games and activities for people to take part in, even in a balloon race!

Noli is a town in the region of Liguria, Italy, about 50km from Genoa. This town was an independent republic from 1193 until 1797, the smallest one of the five so-called "Maritime Republics". One of the smallest towns of the coast of Liguria, but one of the most romantic locations!

Photographer David Stahl has built what's thought to be world’s first 8x10” underwater analogue camera. In search of a challenge, and not buried treasure, Stahl went against his friends who repeatedly told him that bringing his idea to life was impossible and came up with this anything but shallow device. Throw yourself into the deep end and swim among mermaids after the jump!

Dwejra Bay is a place of wild nature with a great natural arch that plunges into the sea, an ideal place for a romantic spring! Where is this beautiful place? It is in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, in Malta (Island of Gozo).

Panoramic views of the South West coastline, an ancient chapel dating back to the 12th century, freely roaming ponies and deer, and a Coast Watch station...this small peninsular of Rame Head in Cornwall fits a lot into a small space.

2012 is the year of the Lomograph! And to celebrate here are my top seven places to visit this coming year.

Never fired in anger...the fort atop the hill at North Head, Devonport, Auckland may now be abandoned, but what's left behind is not only historically interesting - a beautiful park and beach, but also a treasure trove of opportunities for any Lomographer.
