Walking On A Winter Day With An Old Lubitel 2 Loaded With A Lomography Lady Gray 400

In this article, I'll show you some winter photos taken with the Lomography Lady Gray 400 film loaded into an old model of Lubitel 2 with uncoated lens. I love the plasticity and gray tones of this set!

In the winter season, I often use films with a sensitivity of 400 ISO. They are great both on sunny and cloudy days. They can also be pushed to 800 or 1600 ISO in low light conditions. This time, I made an experiment using an old model of Lubitel 2 (one of the first models with maximum shutter speed of 1/200 and uncoated lens.) I loaded the camera with a Lady Gray 400 exposed at its nominal ISO speed and developed in R09 Spezial (another name for Studional, or for the famous Rodinal Special, a fine grain developer.)

I took these photos walking on the pedestrian road between a lake and Villa Olmo in my city of Como. As you can see in the first image, the contrast is moderate as expected in a medium sensitivity film. The color of the water is very rich. It made the lake look deeper and darker.

The grain is moderate and acceptable even for large prints (more than 40×40 cm)

The dynamics are good. The film has a great pose latitude that forgives exposure errors (all these photos were taken without a light meter and some of these are overexposed to 1 or 1.5 stops.)

The gray tones of the sky are pleasant. The complex balance of light and shadow in the same photo blends well.

The uncoated lens of my Lubitel 2 has contributed to lower the contrast of the scene.

You can see the great plasticity of the 120 format in this photo which is commonly found on 35mm cameras.

I developed this film using the dilution 1+15 for 5 minutes; continuous agitation in the first minute and few gentle inversions every 30 seconds.

You should try this film. All I can say is that it’s affordable but it doesn’t sacrifice quality.
