Several months ago, I bought Fuji Superia Reala and loaded my Holga 120N with it. I took some photographs in March and saved the rest for this summer. This is my experience with this lovely film.
In sunny days
It was around the five o’ clock in the afternoon, the sun was shinning bright so I decided to take a walk around my neighborhood and take some photographs with my Holga and an expired Fuji Superia Reala 100. I didn’t want my pictures to be overexposed or underexposed, so I remember being too picky about what to photograph and where. At first, I chose places where the light wasn’t hitting my subjects directly. The results were pretty satisfying.
I shot one photograph aiming at the sun, I was pretty sure my picture would be overexposed and highly contrasted but it wasn’t. It turned out with a soft layer instead, as well as a vintage look. I really love the films that you can use in daylight without fearing the light is too bright that you only get overexposed pictures, but this is something else, I love it.
I am an absent-minded person, so I made some mistakes when I used this film. Instead of setting the camera in the cloudy option when there was no sun, I set it in the sunny option. The photographs turned out a little bit overexposed, but I could distinguish the vibrant colors.
The sun suddenly began to hide in several clouds, so I decided to take a risk and shoot. I am not a fan of the grain in the pictures, usually I get an awful lot of grain in my color negative films; however, the grain this film gives in a cloudy day is the most beautiful I have ever gotten. It is smooth and delicate, but also the colors are still saturated and full of life.
In this situation, it looks as if there was no shadow at all; there is light, the grain is soft, the colors are vibrant and beautiful. But also, it looks like some dream or fantasy; the atmosphere is warm.
This is a beautiful film that no matter the situation you’re in, it will never deceive you. I wanted to buy more of it, but I haven’t been lucky enough to find one again. Then the news came saying this film is discontinued. It is my favorite film, a film you can easily fall in love with.
