Ilford FP4+ 120: Classical Charm from a Black and White Wonder

Ilford FP4+ is a medium speed, traditional black and white film, which is rapidly becoming one of my favourites. Great contrast and tonality make this classic film my first choice when there is good light available.

FP4+ is a traditional black and white film made by Ilford. It is traditional both in the sense that it has been around for quite a few years and indeed has evolved from predecessors FP4 and FP3, but also it has a traditional cubic grain structure. This makes it slightly grainer than modern emulsions such as Ilford Delta or Kodak T-Max, but it is still a fine grained film.

I’ve only shot a couple of rolls of this film, both in my Mamiya C330 medium format camera and I’ve been really pleased with both of them. I’m now happy to report that I’ve got a brick of 10 films sat in my fridge after my last piggy points spending spree.

I’ve used it for portraits and nature/scenic photography and it works well for both purposes.

The film has beautiful tonality, capturing the full range of mid-tones, but still producing nice contrast. I’ve developed it in Kodak HC-110 on each occasion and love the results.

I plan to shoot a lot more of this film over the coming months, but here are a few more photos to be going on with.

Unrivalled when it comes to high quality B&W photography, the Ilford FP4 Plus is a great choice for enlargements with its fine grain, high acutance and exceptional sharpness. Check it out with the rest of our black and white film selection.

FP4 in 35mm is my favourite. Such a pitty they didn't ask for 35mm reviews...
