A beginnier in photography? Playing with a new camera and going through the trial and error phase? Sick of producing images that are either under- or over- exposured? Try using the forgiving Lomography Redscale XR 50-200 which produces vibrant and striking images and increase your success rate! Keep reading for more details.
As my interest in analogue photography increases, I find myself using more ‘advance’ cameras that allows the user to adjust settings such as shutter speed and aperture. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my Diana F+ and Fisheye, but the increased control helps me to better understand the different aspects of photography and enable me to manipulate the image as I please. But being a beginner with no photography background, I often find myself, under- or over- exposing the image, especially when I am using a low ISO film. During this trial and error phase, I end up having only a few decent shots out of twelve and I dread going to the lab to pick up my rolls of film as they are often filled with under/over exposed images. This was until I discovered the Lomography Redscale XR 50-200.
The Lomography Redscale XR 50-200 , as the name suggests, is a film that has an extended ISO setting between 50-200. The range in ISO means that you can treat the film in different ways. If you rate the film as an ISO 50 (slower film speed) and increase the exposure time, the resulting image would add cool blue and green tones to your images. When used with techniques such as double exposure, you would produce images with striking and unique colours.
If you rate the film as an ISO 200 (faster film speed) and reduce the amount of light, the outcome would more resemble a typical redscale where the resulting images will have warm red and orange tones.
The Lomgraphy Redscale XR is currently my favourite film, because it is very forgiving. I still rate the film as an ISO 100 but instead of getting shots that are too dark due to underexposure, I get intense warm red and orange tones. Instead of having excessive light which bleach out the subject, I get vibrant green and blue colours. My success rate in producing decent images has increased and I no longer dread going to the lab to pick up my film!
