Fuji Velvia 50: Hues and Contrast

Fuji Velvia 50 ASA is one of the films that i've enjoyed using; It yielded different hues and great contrast when cross-processed. Read on!

My first impression on the Fuji Velvia 50 ASA was that it yields strong greenish hues just like it’s sibling, Fuji Provia 100F, and upon using it, I was surprised to see not just green but different colors too. In fact, in some photos, green was not dominant at all.

Let me show you the photos that I took with it.

This photo would, for me, be a fine example of 50 ASA Fuji Velvia’s range of hues. As seen in the photo above, it yielded a greenish photo with yellows and blues. Based on this roll, I’ve concluded that the color dominance is based on the colors of the subjects in the frame. Blue Skies with a well-lit frame, it yielded great contrast with no specific color dominance.

On overcast days, It yielded a photo with green as the dominant color.

On subjects with strong colors, it increases its contrast, making it really noticeable.

These conclusions are not accurate because cross-processing doesn’t exactly yield predictable effects on photos. There will be exceptions to the conclusions that I’ve mentioned above, such as the very first photo on this article with 2 cars. It’s well-lit with a blue sky, yet green is the dominant color. It’s the unpredictability that makes slide films really fun to use. So I leave you with this photo:

Simply to remind you that green isn’t the only hue that this film is capable of producing! Keep on shooting! Lomo on!

Fuji Velvia 50 RVP 35mm is super-saturated and as high-res as film can get. When cross-processed, greens become greener and reds and yellows pop. See the whole range of colour slides in our Shop.
