Soft and Subdued Results from Expired Boots Film

Once I felt comfortable with my cameras, I started to experiment with different films. Luckily for me, my boyfriend found 5 rolls of expired Boots film in a charity shop for 99p and I was pleasantly surprised with the resuts from this film.

Having done some research on expired film when my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this film, I expected more extreme results: various colour shifts, blotches of discolouration perhaps, or even no results at all when I developed my films. However, I was happily surprised with the results from this film as they were nothing like what I expected at all.

The tones of these results are soft and subdued with muted colours and an almost delicate feel to the light and contrasts. Rather than dramatic shifts and garish colors, the results of this film went the opposite direction, almost as if the intensity of the chemicals had faded, giving the photos an almost overexposed look without losing too much colour or contrast.

These films expired around 10 years ago, so I imagine that if they were left for longer, then perhaps the results may have been more dramatic. However, if you are looking for these kind of results – soft, almost desaturated images with light contrasts and muted colors, and a lovely film grain, then perhaps an expired color negative film is the film that you are really looking for without realizing it.

Whenever I see an expired film now, I try and snap it up as fast as I can… Although I love the idea of unexpected results, the idea of getting more results like these I find equally as exciting.

  1. I love the pastel colour of your pictures, they look impressionistic to me! What camera do you use?

@Robert I used a Ricoh 500G for these photos - I probably should have mentioned that in the article shouldn't I
