Hasselblad 500C/M: A Swedish Beast

Hasselblad, a name and a brand that makes every photographer, who's had experience with these amazing cameras, smile and reminisce when the beast renders square beauties!

The Hasselblad 500C/M is a professional SLR medium format camera.

The Hasselblad 500C was introduced in 1957 by the Victor Hasselblad AB. It stayed in production until the 1970 and was replaced by the 500C/M (M for modified according to the factory), featuring an interchangeable focusing screen and an improved automatic back, the A-series film magazines.

The new Hasselblad camera has gained a reputation over the years for its robustness, mechanical accuracy and for having a wide range of high-quality lenses, making it the medium-format camera of choice for generations of professional photographers. Victor Hasselblad AB reinforced this reputation by making the most of the fact that their camera had been chosen by NASA for use in space, although not without modifications.

I acquired mine around a year ago. And I’ve never been happier. I remember the great feeling it was to just look through the waist level view finder, walking around in Paris, life seemed so much prettier…

But let’s be clear. The Hasselblad is a fantastic camera but it isn’t all perks… It’s a heavy duty professional camera, therefor, it’s built is of consequence. It’s heavy and weighs over 1Kg. Making it robust and steady, but not necessarily the best camera to carry around on a stroll in town.

But, once you get use to it’s built, it’s just the greatest love affair any photographer could have.

The camera is composed of 3 parts:
-the body
-the film magazine
-the lens

Making it a great component interchangeable camera. Different magazines allows you to shoot different kinds of films without having to finish a roll to change film type. Same goes for the lenses, different lenses for different angles.

I have a 2.8-80mm lens on mine that has shutter speeds ranging from 1 to 1/500s and B mode.
And yes I’m talking about the shutter speeds on the lens, simply because every setting is located of the lens itself. Only the shutter is on the body.

All these settings are there for your photographic pleasures, providing great technical possibilities: huge bokehs and depths of field, outstanding sharpness combined with the unique Hasselblad touch on your photos.

Most of my favorite shots are shot with the Hasselblad 500C/M. And I for sure, will never let this camera leave my collection.

They are the simply the best Cameras! But unfortunately still very expensive. Maybe you can get the body and Standard Lens for a reasonable Price, but further equipment is very expensive (like Lenses, magazines etc.) as this is a 100% professional Camera. Almost every pic from space or from ads by major brands between the 60s and 90s is made with one of these. BUT it is built to last and how could one not want this...

This just make me want to have one, I recently saw one for sale (actually, they have 3) and I did't even bother asking, but tomorrow for sure I'll ask so I can start saving for a beauty like this.
