Nicolas of the Lomography Gallery Store San Francisco is a Lomography lover and a film student. When he heard about the LomoKino, he began to salivate... When at last he had the LomoKino in his hands, it was pure joy. Here he shares his first experiences with the incredible LomoKino!
Lomography’s LomoKino 35mm Movie Maker puts my love for film-making and photography into one amazing camera!
When the Lomokino was first released, I was so excited to discover what this new camera could do. I remember watching the first teaser over and over again. But words and images can’t do justice to the excitement of the Kino… This is a camera that you really have to shoot with to understand the fun of 35mm film making.
While living in Japan, I made a lot of digital videos, one of which used a technique where the camera would be placed in front of the actor. It would be attached to a rig which was then attached to the actor’s body. This style made it seem like everything in the background was moving while the actor stayed still in the frame; This rig is called a snorri cam. Since I was on a budget, I accomplished this feat by placing my camera on a tripod and placing the legs on my waist. Check it out:
As soon as I got the LomoKino for myself, I immediately wanted to make a video in that similar style. I pointed the camera at myself and filmed as I walked through the streets in San Francisco, to the train station and even driving on the highway (which isn’t something I encourage!).
After getting my rolls back, I loved the LomoKino even more than before! Everything from the crank shutter, the easy aperture slider and the close-up button made shooting with this camera an entirely new and fun experience. This is what I came up with!
Shooting with this camera is easier than most people think. Loading the camera may seem intimidating, but after shooting multiple times I feel it’s just as easy as loading my LC-A+. I love that the aperture and the focus can be used continuously as you’re shooting and you don’t have to stop to change those settings. The viewfinder is a little off and is mostly just an estimation of what you’re getting. But after all, shooting from the hip is one of the rules of Lomography!
Another thing I love about the LomoKino is that it’s still so new to the community. There are so many new and creative styles of shooting that have yet to be discovered. As said by Lomography, it’ll bring out the Spielberg in you! Now, it’s your turn to experiment with this 35mm movie monster. What will you create for the analogue future?
Enter a new analogue dimension with the LomoKino. Lomography’s own 35mm analogue movie camera allows you to capture action and immortalize your story on film! Shoot 144 frames on any 35mm film and create your own cinematic masterpieces. Want to watch your movie the old-school way? We also offer the LomoKino and LomoKinoscope package!
