Going Low With Efke KB 50

Struck with portrait fever and looking for a film to love, I stumbled across Efke KB 50. With its high silver content, this pretty little low-speed throws down gorgeous, grain-free grayscales and a wicked exposure latitude.

For black and white portraits, I usually run into the arms of Ilford Delta 100. But the guy at the local camera store swore by the Efke, so I decided to give it a shot. I pointed my camera at my roommate, snapped a few shots, and developed them the next day.

To be honest, the low speed made me a little nervous, and considering the often cloudy weather of where I live, I wasn’t expecting much from my shots. Boy, was I wrong! There was not a single photo on the roll that didn’t turn out, and more than half turned out gorgeous—like, I would print this and hang it in my house gorgeous.

The grayscales give it a highly dimensional softness that just isn’t possible with higher speed, lower silver content film. The low grain allows for awesome, clear enlargements and can give your photos a very vintage feel. I would definitely buy this film again.

I understand this film is tricky to develop, which put me off trying it for a long time, but the results here speak for themselves. Another one for the basket! It's sold in the UK as Adox I believe. Good article-many thanks!

Good stuff. For some reason, I like the fact that the film stock has a blue cast. You make me want to use my rolls soon, maybe this weekend. :D
