Fuji Velvia 50 120 and Microclicks: A Good Combination

Fujifilm Velvia 50 is a slow speed film that yields greenish to blueish results when cross-processed. I was a bit surprised to find that it does not produce reddish or pinkish colors after cross-processing; even so, it's amazing for multiple exposures--or what I call "micro-clicks!"

Having only used Velvia 100 and Velvia 100F films before, I was quite astonished to find that Velvia 50 does not yield reddish and pinkish results when cross-processed. In fact, the pictures have a distinctive green tone with a touch of blue depending on the light situation (for example, a blue sky is represented by an intense blue colour, while a cloudy sky results in a more greenish picture).

Due to its low ISO value, I decided to use the film for multiple exposures, namely for a technique I call “micro-clicks”. It consists of taking a picture, then advancing the film a little, then taking another picture, advancing the film a little, and so on. This way, interesting panoramic pictures can be created. Obviously, the film is exposed multiple times, which is why films with a low ISO value need to be used, even when it’s cloudy. Also one has to work with the smallest aperture possible, otherwise the photos will be hopelessly overexposed.

Another time, I used the film for quadruple exposures and some of the pictures turned out great. Others were a little overexposed, however, and one really has to pay attention not to underestimate the ISO 50.

All in all, I am very happy with the results I got from this film and I am surely going to use it for more microclicks and probably also for some single exposures on a nice and sunny day next summer.

Fuji Velvia 50 RVP 120 is known for its precise modulation, vivid colour reproduction and excellent image quality. This is the outstanding film for nature, fashion, products, interiors, and artwork photography. See the whole range of colour slides in our Shop.
