Fujicolor Pro 400H (120, 400 ISO)

Fujifilm's professional quality, medium speed film. Check it out!

I was given some of this film by a friend recently, and having not used a roll of it since the first time I ever took pictures on my own, I was excited to try some again and see what kind of results I could get. Fujicolor Pro 400H (NPH, to some) is Fujifilm’s equivalent of Kodak Portra 400 as far as how it’s marketed, and it’s quite comparable to the new version as far as color results are concerned. I would say it was more like the old NC than VC, but I would also say that about the new Portra, so I guess that might just be me. Saturation is not extreme, but it isn’t very dull, either.

The film looks great in daylight, and is a very good choice for a toy camera in the early morning and late afternoon/evening. On a cloudy day, things seems to look a bit blue-gray, which is a complaint some have made about the film, but I rather like the way it makes the shot appear moody. The film holds up well against a normal flash, as well, and doesn’t get blown out too easily, considering you’ve compensated your exposure/distance for the flash you’re using. Unless you’re right on top of your subject, in which case it would be out of focus anyway, you’re not likely to wash out your subject, and it also takes colored flashes well.

Try using it outside later in the day, in bright daylight for macro shots to get better detail, and indoors with a flash. I’ve used the film quite a bit, and I have to say I’m very pleased. As always, though, a review isn’t helpful without examples, so here are some of mine:

The Fuji Pro 400H 120 is one of the finest 120 color films out there. You get the extra speed of 400 ISO while maintaining excellent fine-grain and banging colors of a slower film. See the whole range of color negatives in our Shop.
