Subtle Elegance from Kentmere 400

The soft tones provided by Kentmere 400 are indispensable in attaining those moody, noir-inspired effects. A film not to be overlooked, consider the Kentmere 400 to be your new best black and white friend when faster film is a must.

Truthfully, this is the first (and so far only) genuine black and white film I have ever tried. I was very eager to experience the real thing after only using Kodak BW400CN, which is a decent enough film for beginners, but it didn’t deliver in the contrast department. Though Kentmere 400 does not provide the most extraordinary contrast either, it has these wonderful, silvery highlights with the most charming, vintage glow to them.

I was nervous to buy Kentmere 400 because the Lomography shop has no example photos, but my worries were proven to be unnecessary. The description of “smooth grain” and “soft quality” appealed to me and turned out to be quite true. All of my photos were taken around sunset, which you wouldn’t know because there isn’t a grain to be found.

My cousin’s wedding proved to be a great place to give this film a test run. As far as this film’s capabilities go, not a single shot disappointed me. It was a nice way to catch my breath after a lot of cross-processed photos with explosive contrast. The price wasn’t bad either, considering I’ve seen rolls of Kodak BW400CN go for about five dollars each as well. Needless to say, I look forward to my next opportunity to use Kentmere 400.
