LC-Wide: 7 Days, 3 Rolls of Film, and 1 Wide Lens!

Lomography Netherlands let me borrow the new LC-Wide to try it out. A smart little camera with a wiiiiiide angle!

Wow! I felt honored when Lomography Netherlands asked me if I wanted to try out the new LC-Wide. The LC-A+ and I have been going steady for a while now, but I’m sure he doesn’t mind that I hang out with his new brother this week.

The LC-Wide is impressively packaged. The LC-Wide isn’t just wrapped in a cute little box, no the camera is placed in a big wooden case full with beautiful books and accessories.

The camera itself looks almost identical to the LC-A+, yet it feels slightly more sturdy.
But enough on packaging and looks. What matters of course is the camera!

The LC-Wide can photograph on different formats. There is the option of regular frames, square format, or you can choose to capture 72 images on your roll of film with the half-frame possibility! However, before you start with a roll of film, you will have to decide the format you want to shoot it on. During this testing week, I was too impatient to play around with the masks and stuck to the regular format.

And now? I’ve loaded up the camera, and am thinking what to photograph around Rotterdam. A first trip was of course across the Erasmus Bridge, because the wide panorama of the city from there is begging to be captured by a wiiiiiiide lens! Furthermore I decide to try out how the camera will react to the skyscrapers in the center of town.

When looking through the viewfinder of the LC-Wide I can immediately see how straight lines get curved in a cool way. When shooting my first roll I was quite careful and tried to make precise compositions. That is not what the camera is made for. What you see through the viewfinder definitely ends up in your picture. But you get a lot more as well! The advantage is that you are guaranteed to capture your subject. But really, keep in mind that you don’t just need to get close — you have to get even closer! :)

And luckily that is very possible with the LC-Wide. The camera can focus on very close distances. My LC-A has 4 different focus zones. With the LC-Wide there are only 2 zones, which makes that you will rarely miss the correct focus. Option 1 is for your nice and close shots, option 2 is for every distance further than 1 meter.

The most fun experiments with the LC-Wide derived from the discovery what you can actually do with such an impressive wide lens. After my first roll of film, I didn’t care about the viewfinder too much and stuck to the Lomography rule ‘shoot from the hip’. Try to get as close as possible and see what exciting effects you get. A modest table in a little garden turns into a buffet, an arm looks like it’s elastic, and yes, I look like a true giant! ;)

,

Let me stress though that the camera is not just for taking gimmicky shots. As long as you remember that you really have to get close and that you can capture truly a lot in one image, it is a great and versatile little camera. My favorite shots with the LC-Wide came from following my favorite Lomography rules: “Don’t think just shoot”, “Get close!” and of course, “Shoot from the hip!”

Superlomofun guaranteed!

The Lomo LC-Wide boasts the newly-developed 17mm Minigon Ultra-Wide Angle lens. This 35mm camera wonder is the perfect companion for your photo expeditions. It produces eye-catching splashes of color with astonishing saturation and contrasts with the added versatility of 3 different formats.
