Lubitel 166+: The Lomographers Swiss Army knife

If you like to shoot with 135 and 120 in several formats, don’t like to carry too many cameras or can’t make up your mind if you want a 120 or 35mm camera, this is the perfect camera for you: The Lubitel 166+.

The Lubitel 166+ is an improved version of the old Lubitel 166 cameras, you can take 120 film photos in several formats (6×6, 6×4.5 and endless panorama) and it can take 35mm film photos (with sprocket holes and endless panorama), just load your favourite film and shoot. The Lubitel 166+ package includes the Lubikin 35mm conversion kit and the 6×6, 6×4.5, 35mm masks, it is that easy, just pick your film and have fun.

The camera is fully manual, no Cds cell to help you out (that also means that you don’t need batteries which is a good thing), just get use to it and let the Triplet-22 (f4.5, 75mm) lens do the rest. You can set the speed from 1/250 to B mode and the aperture from f22 to f4.5 (in the back plate you can find a small help to figure out the best aperture/speed combination.
You can find another small help on the focus, you can focus from 0.8 meters to infinity but it has small stops (like in zone focus cameras) that are very helpful especially when you’re shooting from the hip.

The camera has other useful features: tripod thread, cable release thread, flash hotshoe, 35mm film counter, on-camera exposure guides, film rewinder (you can rewind both 35mm and 120 films) and some transparent gels to apply on your viewfinder so you can see the limits of the several masks and film formats. Making multiple exposures wit this camera is very easy; just cock the shutter and shoot, not satisfied? Re-cock the shutter and shoot again and again and again… Just perfect.

What I like in this camera:

-Size

-Weight

-Versatility

-Roughness

-No need for batteries

What I dislike in this camera:

-No automatic mode. This is both good and bad, I like the idea that this camera doesn´t need batteries, it is good for the environment but I am an automatic zone focus camera lover and if it is automatic, it needs batteries (or a selenium cell which isn’t very reliable).

-Some parts are weak, the film winder is fixed by a tiny screw and if you force it you may have to glue it.

-The back plate lock is a bit loose and you have to be careful, it may open with your precious film still inside (a bit of duct tape should do the job).

-The small rubber cap from the back plate (the one that covers the window counter for 120 film is very easy to lost, again, duct tape may help).

These things I dislike are very small things and I may be a little picky, overall, this is a great camera and it worth every cent (or piggy). In a scale from 0 to 10, I give it a 9 (because I’m picky ). XD
