Summer Super Sampler Love!

Do you know those intense passions that happen in the summer and make you wait all winter to meet again? That's what´s going on between me and my Supersampler Dalek's edition, my favorite multilens camera.

If there existed such thing as perfection, you could use the Supersampler anytime everywhere. But to love is to accept one’s imperfections. Yes, you have to use it in bright sunlight and with high ISO films but it is definitely worth waiting all winter for sunnier and longer days – the results are amazing. Although I like most of the multilens cameras, no one can produce the amazing effects that this four-panoramic-lenses do. Moving the camera up and down, right to left, flipping or just pointed at a moving subject, use it to shoot buildings, animals, people, landscapes… remember rule #8: You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film. The Supersampler comes with a rubber viewfinder that is cute and useless, I don’t quite know where mine is… so, sometimes you just point, shoot and hope it comes out nice. It normally does!

My first favorite subject with the Supersampler were buildings. I found out immediately that this camera is fantastic to shoot architecture.

One of the reasons it takes pictures so good is that besides being a multilens camera, Supersampler is also panoramic. You just have to remember that when you are using it. When used horizontally, it takes great “sampler-o-ramas”, as commented by vicuna, and it is cool to give a bigger picture of the place where you are at when placed vertically and moved around. And don’t forget, to flip is always a success with this camera because it is able to focus quite well when moved – the other thing that makes this camera so cool. Use the 1,2,3,4 numbers in the camera to distinguish vertically and horizontally. The panoramic pictures are great for landscapes and travel pictures but it can be used when shooting any subject – even a person or a car.

So, you already know this camera gives great results when moved or flipped. Turn things around – keep the camera still and shoot something or someone moving. The camera has two velocities that you can change according to the movement you are shooting but I normally use the longer one.

I also enjoy to take portraits with this camera because it allows you not only to shoot the subject – try to shoot different parts of it in every frame or just different angles of the same thing/person – but also the context around it. And it can be so funny if the person is doing some strange face…!

I think that Supersampler pictures turn out very artistic. Wanna go abstract? Rule #5: Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible. Just forget about the context! Patterns, textures, colors… anything you feel attracted to!

Besides of all the qualities I just described, some other details make the Supersampler the coolest camera ever. It looks like a toy, specially when it has crazy draws and vivid colors has my Supersampler Pink Dalek’s edition, so it will call the attention of people although they don’t really understand at first what they are looking at…! It looks disposable and cheap, so it won’t be a target for thieves on most places and it doesn’t uses batteries so it is impossible to use an entire film and later find out that no pictures where taken (come on, it happened once to everybody!). It’s light (great for traveling) and although I know it can be fragile, I can’t complain about mine. The final detail – you have to pull the string to advance the film. Just adorable!
