My World is Spinning

When I put my hands on this cam, the first thing I thought was "what?!" but then I realized how much fun it can be!

  • 2010 –

It was back in December when I got my hands on this “brand new” camera, the Spinner 360. It didn’t even have a name back then and my first thought when I saw it was, “what?!, what does this camera do and how do I shoot with it?!”. Thanks to LSI, all my questions were answered ASAP and I was ready to shoot with it.

But, of course all those answers didn’t make life easy for me! Loading wasn’t that different from any other 35mm camera I owned. The only problem was, since mine didn’t have any marks for R, F/8 or F/16, I kept forgetting it at R first. And then, on my first time out with the Spinner, I received weird glances from people around. Here I was holding what I like to call “a hand bomb looking cam” where I pull the “swivel” and hear a weird noise…. And boom, it just turns all over the place and no one really understands what it does, including me :) When I got back the roll and scanned it, I was puzzled by the results I got, the back ground was amazing, I have never seen so many thing in just one photo frame, but also, there I was, in almost all the photos, with an expression that looked like I was seeing aliens rather than posing for a camera :))

It’s been about 6 months I’ve been using this camera and I still have funny faces and people looking in my direction whenever I take it out. Unusual things keep happening. But there have been things I learned in the meantime as well. For one thing, it’s amazing to be the first people to use a new Lomo camera!!! Also, this camera can be used anywhere, especially during the day time. I love shooting with it among friends where I don’t have to worry if I get everyone in the screen, I know I do! Another, when I have big scenery in front of me, I can be sure that I’m not missing out anything. I learned that I need to be gentle with it, because you don’t really know how much of the film you have already used and might tear (I did) the film from the canister while trying to just one more shot.

I think the most important thing I learnt was to listen to the Spinner. Once I started paying attention to the sounds it made, I could easily understand if I forgot it in R mode, or if I was shooting properly, or if I ran out of film or not. It has this clicking sound that tells you everything you need to know to keep Spinning.
So now, Spinner 360 is one of my favorite cameras (I still call it the “thingy”), And I have so many ideas to do with it, but I’ll share those later ;)
