A Winner for Beginners: Fuji Sensia (35mm, 100 so) User-Review

Fuji Sensia brings out radical pinks in bright light, and deep purples in lower light. High contrast and weird colours make a beautiful but quirky combination.

I must say I am probably one of the least experienced Lomographers of the lot. When I first wanted to try xpro-ing, I headed on down to my nearest reputable camera store and searched for slide film. They had one item in stock – a six-pack of Fuji Sensia. I bought it. Now I realise that spontaneity was in my favour. Once I returned home, I checked on the Lomo website to see what I can expect my results to be like, and I was amazed. Although it wasn’t the cool greens I originally wanted from xpro, I was very excited to experiment with the Fuji.

Taking some photos around my area with a few friends produced one good shot of the beach a short walk from my home with amazing vignetting in the sky. The real fun started when I went on exchange to Germany a few months later and took a few rolls of this film to Berlin.
It was like Berlin’s famous landmarks were suddenly illuminated by a giant purple spotlight. Every image came out looking like it was taken through a colour gel. I really liked the combination of the purple with an art-deco fronted theatre I happened to pass by, which made the word “Babylon” on the front light up like a neon sign. Seeing the world though a veil of purple is very interesting, the hue can be bright and happy, but in lower light it feels sad and heavy. The way the hue reacts to the exposure changes the whole mood of the images, whilst still keeping a quirky feel.

A cheap slide film that renders amazing results and does it with style, it has become a very favourite and I hope to use it again in future – you should too.
