Fisheye-ing the Night

We all know that our sweet Lomo cameras love and crave the sun but there’s always a certain mystique to shooting at night. How to do it? Bulb is the answer!

The Fisheye 2 is a great improvement upon the original because of two things: a hotshoe and the bulb mode, which when used correctly, helps tremendously in getting night scenes we otherwise wont be able to take a picture of. From light streaks, party action shots to beautiful long exposure landscapes, the Fisheye 2 is all you need for a night about town!

For people shots while partying, have your colorsplash flash or ringflash ready. With its f/8 aperture and close minimum focusing distance, you’re sure to get the wackiest portraits of your friends coupled with the prettiest club lights streaking onto the exposure. What you can do is position yourself for the shot with your camera on your right arm (make sure its in bulb mode!) and your flash in your left. Click and hold the shutter to let the light in for a few seconds, then trigger the flash and release! Easy off-camera lighting, which helps get rid of red eye and other flash problems! For people shots, remember to use a flash so that you can freeze the action, otherwise your subject will look like a ghost. Or is that what you want to see? :)

With long exposures of static objects, the Fisheye still excels even without a tripod mount. If you want, you can hack a mount there. Otherwise, look for a steady place like the floor, a table, etc then fire away. Depending on the lighting conditions, you have to hold the shutter and the camera for a while. In my case I usually do it for 20-30 seconds. I find that with long exposures, X-Pro gives much more saturated colors. Experiment and see what works for you! Don’t forget to come in close, look for lines you can curve, and best of all, to enjoy!

Here are some shots all taken in bulb mode!

Great pictures! I like how the darkness of the photo blends with the black frame making the picture look seamless. Smart move.
