Lubitel 166b - Bright Day Shooting

Last year i was looking for something different, after completing a 3 year photography course, i was spent, however i felt the bug biting again. What could i do in photography that really was inspiring, different and definitely not digital!

I knew it had to be medium format and was looking for a affordable camera, i then came across the Lubitel 166B and what find it was. It looked great, when it arrived it had only been used twice and still had that new camera smell. At last a proper camera that i could restart my photographic journey.

The Lubitel is such a versatile camera. On bright days it;s all you need. I found loading the camera with ISO 400 Film and setting the aperture to F8 and shutter speed to 1/125th yields the most colourful, sharp and striking results. Sure people look at you and wonder “why is that person looking at there feet for” or " what is that round there neck?" but once you tell them it was made in the 80’s and it’s a Russian camera they are really interested in what you are doing.

Walking along on a bright day, the camera is in it’s element.

The Lubitel is also great at Black and White Shooting, it produces good looking contrasty results. I have not yet mounted the Lubitel on a tripod, you don,t really need to in the correct lighting conditions. When night shooting i just carefully place the camera on a flat surface and use a cable release and still the camera produces the goods. i used another camera loaded with the same film speed and used it as a timer to work out the exposure time for Lubitel use at night. Again the results did not disappoint,it produces bright breathtaking images.

If you are thinking of taking the plunge into Medium Format the Lubitel 166 is the ideal Camera for you.
