Petzval Lens Test: The Independent Record Market

Each year The independent Label Market takes place at the Old Spitalfields Market and brings together some of the most interesting independent record labels. It’s the perfect place to meet label owners, talk about music and buy some exclusive and new releases. I took along the Petzval lens and was surprised at the reaction it received!

Moshi Moshi Records

The Independent Label Market is the perfect place for alternative, underground music fans. This year there were stalls from some of the most exciting Independent labels, young and old, such as Warp, Domino, Upset the Rhythm, Stolen, Hyperdub and Moshi Moshi.

Stolen Records

All of these labels are unique and collectively they cover a huge range of music genres from lo-fi indie, modern psychedelia, dubstep, electronica, library music and more.

R&S Records

I have been going for three years now and always enjoy chatting to label owners about the latest releases and getting a first-hand update on the state of the music industry.

This year I took the Petzval lens along to capture some of the action. What I didn’t realise is that it caused quite a lot of attention with people declaring “oooh look at that gold lens!” I had people coming up and asking what it was and whether they could test it out. Even when I stopped for a quick beer people were still checking my lens out!

The closest the lens can focus is 1 meter which, in a small crowded space can be quite tricky. I did end up backing into a few people whilst trying to get a good close up. It was really fun to shoot with though and I think I managed to capture some of the atmosphere of the market! Oh and I bought a big stash of records and maxed out my monthly budget too.
