ProfiFoto's Dirk Böttger Tests the New Petzval Lens

ProfiFoto Magazine readers are probably already in the loop! Our beloved Petzval Lens was featured in the July edition of the German photography magazine and was personally tested out by the managing editor himself. Not only was Dirk Böttger thrilled with the lens, but so was the rest of the staff. find out about Dirk's experience with the Petzval lens in an exclusive interview.

Name: Dirk Böttger
Occupation: Photography Journalist,
Instructor and Workshop Leader, Author
Location: Krefeld, Germany

Hey Dirk! Please introduce yourself to the community.

I was fortunate enough to be able turn my love of photography into my career. During my Journalism studies, I specialized on the themes Photography and Didactics of Photography. This was followed by an internship with PHOTOGRAPHIE magazine that turned into a full-time position, which had me fully occupied until I switched over to being the managing editor for ProfiFoto. Aside from that, I’ve always done commissioned work as a photographer and have had a studio in Krefeld, Germany for many years now. For five years, I’ve been leading photography workshops, seminars and trips. Moreover, I work as an author for MITP Publishing and have published many textbooks on the thems of digital photography and image editing, not to mention the articles I write for dailies about everything that has to do with digital imaging.

You recently had the opportunity to extensively test the Petzval Lens. What was the staff’s reaction to the lens and what is your opinion regarding the lens?

Of course, the Petzval’s aesthetic calls for attention in itself and ensured curious glances from colleagues. The brass body is old school in the best way, and yet the photo quality is contemporary. Working with the lens with the manual focus wonderfully slows down the process, and, at least in my case, makes one more carefully consider the composition.

Were you satisfied with the test and your results? What do you like the most about the Lomography Petzval Lens?

The Petzval Lens makes the most sense when working with an aperture from 1.0 to 2.8. That’s when the magic happens- that amazing bokeh effect. This effect can’t be recreated with photo-editing software or if you could, that wouldn’t be without a large time investment. In that sense, the Petzval Lens broadens the pallet of creative expression for me as a photographer and that during the exposure, where matters the most.

Where were the photos captured?

The lens accompanied me on a short trip to the sea. The photos that came out of it boast the typical Petzval blurring, which give landscape photos a kind of fairytale touch.

Which photo opportunities would you recommend the Petzval Lens for?

The Petzval Lens is above all a portrait lens, and allows the seperation of motif and background with an open aperture and of course makes the signature Petzval-blurring in the background. But landscape and nature photographers can also work with the lens and end up with interesting results. Sports photographers are left out with this one, though, because of the slow manual focusing.

Do you have tips or advice for current and future Petzval users working with the lens?

Give yourself time. Setting the sharpness with an open aperture on the Petzval Lens takes a bit of practice. The necessary diligence in focusing transfers to your work method and the compositioning. But because of that, working with the Petzval lens is an inspiring process- you just have to get into it.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions and to show us some of your photos!
