Richmond Lam Shoots With The Petzval

LomoAmigo Richmond Lam recently tested the Lomography Petzval Lens out in Hong Kong and we're pleased to share his shots with you after the jump!

Richmond takes amazing portraits and so when we paired the Petzval Lens with Richmond we anticipated a match made in photo heaven.

We asked Richmond to tell us about his Petzval experience, to which he replied…

In the age of digital photography, with most photographers using mainly the same cameras and lenses, to achieve a personal look and feel we often depend heavily on post production. So it is quite refreshing to test out the Petzval, a lens that gives a unique bokeh to your images off camera.

I have never been a big fan of equipment that has too much of a ‘look’, like the fisheye lens or the star filter. Unless it’s appropriate, I find it gimmicky. It’s lazy. The Petzval could become that, if you rely too much on the differently shaped aperture plates. Heart-shaped bokeh is just not my thing. But the Petzval is subtle, and with its 85mm focal length and fast F2.2 aperture, it is great as a portrait lens and should be considered a serious photographic tool.

Over the few days I worked with the Petzval, it’s been a joy to use. I mainly photograph people free hand, so perhaps that contributes to the softness of my images. But I like that about the Petzval, it’s not pin sharp, it’s not perfect. I like imperfection, it’s much more interesting, it’s liberating. It’s life.

Enjoy the gallery of photos that make exemplary use of the bokeh effect and allow them to serve as inspiration for your own Petzval adventures! Also, be sure to check out Photographer Richmond Lam Shoots With The LC-A+
