A signed copy of Alfred Eisenstaedt’s iconic "V-J Day in Times Square" photograph along with his Leica Illa rangefinder will be up for auction in WestLicht Photographica Aution this coming May.
Alfred Eisenstaedt was an American photojournalist known for his candid photographs; most famously, for his V-J Day in Times Square photograph, which captured an American sailor kissing a woman in a white dress in Times Square, New York on V-J Day, August 14, 1945.
This coming May 24, a 17.5 × 12 in. gelatin silver print of this photograph, signed by Eisenstaedt himself, will be up for auction at the 8th WestLicht Photo Auction in Vienna, Austria. Starting bid is € 9,000, and it is estimated to fetch a sum around € 16,000 – 18,000.
On the other hand, Eisenstaedt’s Leica Illa rangefinder, the camera he used to take the V-Jay Day photograph, as well as many others in the subsequent decades, will be up for auction at the 23rd WestLicht Camera Auction the next day, May 25. Starting bid is € 12,000, and it is estimated to fetch a sum around € 20,000 – 25,000.
