We have asked 25 UK artists, illustrators and generally creative types to customise the La Sardina DIY for a huge exhibition that will run until March. The "Let's Play Sardines" Exhibition will be shown at all three of our UK Stores. We asked paper master Hattie Newman to tell us a bit about her work and her contribution to this exciting project.
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a set maker who delights in crafting bespoke sets and props (usually out of paper) that carry a sense of charm and wonder. Originally from Devon, I studied illustration in Bristol and now work from my studio in East London.
How would you describe your life in two sentences?
I’m most content when I’m in my studio working out a way to make something, surrounded by my strange, sentimental rubbish. I’m a little hamster on a very colourful wheel happily running round but also too scared to stop.
Where did your interest in illustration begin?
Probably when I received my first box of lego.
What materials do you choose to use and why?
I love working with paper as I feel like I can make anything out of it! It can be cut, folded, curved and it has a lovely, tangible quality that I think everyone enjoys. I’ve recently been working with wood which has been fun as it’s forcing me to be more graphic and it’s longer lasting!

Anything exciting lined up for 2013?
Masks, machines, and big stuff. And I’m moving to a bigger studio.
