Interview with PIX Magazine's Sarah Kinbar!

PIX is a brand new online photography magazine geared towards female photographers. We were able to pick the brain of Sarah Kinbar, one of the folks behind the scenes at PIX Magazine. She has some great news to share with the Lomography community about what you can expect from PIX and about her own relationship with photography. So for all you photo savvy ladies out there we suggest you check out PIX!

Tell the Lomography community a little about PIX Magazine and what sort of content they can expect from this new publication.

PIX is a digital magazine for women who are passionate about photography. We’re not professional photographers, but we want to learn new techniques that will help us make better pictures. Every story in the new issue delivers tips and ideas that you can apply right away—from using a reflector or a tripod properly to making crafts with your photos. I especially love the iron-on wall photo tutorial, which is a cool way to go frameless with pictures you’ve taken. The winter issue isn’t just for the holidays because it’s live through March, but it does contain some great gift ideas for photography fanatics.

What are your goals for PIX?

We send PIX to readers who fit the profile we’ve created these stories for, and ultimately we want to see these readers share PIX with their friends, to spread the love. These are so many fun and helpful stories in these pages, we want them to get out into the world and inspire lots of women.

What about Lomography interests your readers?

The flexibility of the Belair X 6-12 is hugely appealing to our readers. The fact that you can shoot in three formats, and that the lenses are interchangeable, is a fit for what our readers want. That’s why we featured this particular camera on the opening spread of our “Stuff We Love” feature. On top of that, we love the style of the Lomography brand, and the way it embraces the joy of photography.

Tell us a little about your own relationship with photography. What kind of subjects do you like to shoot?

My life has been immersed in photography for as long as I can remember. My sister is an advanced amateur, and my sister-in-law is a pro. My boyfriend Todd is a sports photographer, and his live-action shots blow my mind. As for my professional background, I was the editor-in-chief of Garden Design magazine, and rich, vibrant images of stunning international gardens have been a mainstay of that publication since its inception. I also oversaw the redesign of American Photo magazine in 2009. As for my own pictures, my subjects are my family members. My boyfriend and I have a blended family with four children, and we both take pictures of them daily. Some of those shots are posted on our blog, bigblendedfamily.com. And, I would be a fool if I didn’t mention how much I like taking pictures of my boyfriend. He is completely gorgeous, and he’s a competitive waterskier. I love taking pictures of him from the boat while he skis.

So what can we expect from PIX in this future? Any cool upcoming projects or features?

I want to keep working with the three main contributors who wrote a lot of stories for this issue: Anastasia Bowen, Anna Powers, and my sister Rachel Kinbar. All three of them—as well as the rest of the team—have such a great vision about the stories they create. When I first sat down with Anna Powers, who is a pro photographer as well as a seasoned writer, I was blown away by the wealth of story-friendly information she rattled off with such clarity and enthusiasm that I had to say yes Yes YES to her ideas. So I want to keep working with them to produce these stories that connect with the way photography lovers really live: taking pictures of their friends, lovers and kids; sharing their images via social media; putting their pictures on their walls and giving them as gifts to the people they love.

Thanks to Sarah for taking the time to share a little about herself and PIX with Lomography!
