The Moon Lives on Earth

We're often in search of sources of illumination. Either, literally, pure light, or works, people, and places that serve to illuminate us. Two artists have been traveling the globe for a decade with a crescent moon and have ingeniously created a photo series that tells the age old love story between man and moon.

The photography series is called “Private Moon”. The creatives behind it are Leonid Tishkov and Boris Bendikov. Can you pinpoint the shooting locations? The dreamy photos were taken across Taiwan, Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, New Zealand, Germany, Serbia, Italy, the Arctic, France, Austria, Japan, Latvia, and Singapore from 2002 onwards.

On Tishkov’s blog, each entry is a poem. Below are fragments of the poem that Leonid Tishkov composed for “Private Moon”.

The sky is near.
Open the attic and you’ll see
there next to the wasp nest
rings the blinding light
of the lost moon

The funeral of the moon-every morning
Come nightfall you discover the body of the newborn moon
and help return it to the sky
leaving a mere trace in the snow
a thawing light impression

Do you experience the love story between the man and the fallen moon when viewing this intimate series? The duo often posts finds of old children’s book illustrations. What better depiction of Earth’s satellite than through sketches and simple ideas, whose only purpose is to inspire children? That being said, “Private Moon” is similarly quiet (just looking at the illuminated moon makes me feel safe) and inspiring. Great creators have cited the moon as their primary source of inspiration. How about you?
