Shooting the Macy’s Day Parade with the LC-A+ and Slide film

There is always a first time for everything, and the past week I was lucky as I had the opportunity to watch the New York Thanksgiving’s parade for the first time, capturing the event with a LC-A camera charged with a slide film to be developed on cross process, also for the first time in my life. You would think that doing so many things for the first time something would go wrong, but no, it was the best.

I was looking forward to go to the parade. I’m not from the US and have previously watched parts of the parade on movies and T.V shows, so it was a dream come true to be in NY for Thanksgiving Day. The Parade started on the 72nd St. at 9:00 AM so I was thinking of going to Columbus Circle at 10:00 AM. Unfortunately, I took the wrong train and, suddenly, I was in Time Square without realizing. I got down there anyway and went everywhere looking for the giant balloons. It was exciting. There were so many people there that the police wouldn’t let you get too close. It was chaos, after jumping a police fence and fighting with the crowd, I finally found a good spot to take my photos.

As for the camera, the LC-A is a terrific one, her glass lens gives you a high definition image, and the built-inside light-meter helps you to take a good picture on sunny and dark days. The day was perfect to shoot all 36 photos, with so many balloons and so many people doing so many things. Every one was happy and the day was not that cold. I was in heaven. Even the crowd did not matter to me. The parade was magical and immensely enjoyable. After it was finished, I began to walk around the people and the police men…perfect pictures along the way.

I shot the photos with a Lomography X-Pro slide 200 ISO and processed them like a regular color film. I always have listened that this cross-process gives you a lot of contrast and color effects, and, indeed, it did. The results where amazing, as for the first time as a Lomographer all of the 36 photos where good, I didn’t lose even one photo (it was a really shine day, and the sun was in front of me) and the autumn color was definitely there.

What a great day. Three new things in my life, and the three of them were perfect and fun. Now I really love the LC-A camera, I will be shooting with it next time, and for sure I will use the cross-process again.
