Finding the Beauty in a Single Spot

When you're thinking of engaging in a photo-project, you're probably thinking something short-term like going out and photographing a stranger's closeup or spending one fine evening light-painting. How about a never ending project? After the jump, discover how re-photographing the same object and location can yield very different results and the hobby spun out of it.

Re-watching a film or picking up a book for the 3rd time most often results in a different experience by the receiver. The individual has changed since their primary viewing, and so the ideas that come across from the artwork are either stronger or more muted. He or she either connects more or less with the piece in question that previously.

UK-based photographer Kevin Day caught the same-spot photograph bug 5 years ago. As a result, he’s captured the same tree in a field in numerous light and atmospheric settings. His photo series, of which the above photographs are a part of, is titled My friend, the dead tree. The tree, reminiscent of Sleepy Hollow, is a great subject. It provides the one “constant” element in Day’s photos which are in essence “studies” of the numerous changes that take place in the world around us. The tree pops out like a black card silhouette stuck onto a watercolor wash background. It’s quite majestic to look at, even despite the fact it’s lifeless.

I’m sure we’ve all taken a few photos of the same thing whether it be our house exterior, our loved one’s faces or the building across the street from our regular bus stop.
