Paul’s Life Documented by Boris the Pass-on-Lomo

Paul van de Berg, architect and former teacher at the Gerrit Rietveld art academy in Amsterdam. He invited Boris the-pass-on-Lomo to spend the week at the canals of Amsterdam. The beautiful black and white photos and anecdotes tell Paul’s life story.

*Who did Boris end up with and what’s his life like? *
My name is Paul and I’m an old space cadet. My life consists of throwing away loads of paper. I also like to read and write, and occasionally I go to concerts or the theater. Once a week I go to the art academy to talk to students.

How did Boris end up with you and which assignment did you get?
I got Boris-the-pass-on-Lomo from Aukje Dekker, the previous owner of Boris. She gave me the assignment to photograph something I detest. I wanted to capture a horrible woman sitting on the table, but unfortunately I missed and she’s not in the photo.

Were you familiar with Lomography before?
My best and favorite camera is the Leica. I shot a lot with Kodak, Yashica, Polaroid and Rolleiflex cameras, but never with Lomography before.

How did you like having Boris around?
I stopped photographing when my eye sight got worse after I had a stroke a few years ago. I say I’m “beyond the image” – I’m freed from the actual image, I don’t have to look primarily. This experience with Boris to me is like a temporary relapse.

How did Boris become part of your life during this week?

Boris was with me all the time and that made me more aware of my surroundings, constantly on the lookout for things to capture.

What did you like taking photos of with Boris?
Nothing really stood out. I took Boris everywhere, to all my day-to-day activities. And that is what I captured. Here there and everywhere, quite ordinary locations. Bingo evening at the Spijkerbar, the Scheltema café, the Gemeente Museum in The Hague and the Concertgebouw, that kind of things.

What would you like to be the assignment for the next owner?
The next owner’s assignment will be to take a first love photo – an assignment you may interpret as you wish!
