Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades of the Past

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is as traditional as turkey and cranberry sauce for New Yorkers. With its whimsical floats and wonderful performers, you'll see why the street spectacle has been going on for nine decades! Did you watch it this year? Check out some vintage photos from parades past!

There are many ways to celebrate American Thanksgiving: you can stuff your face with turkey, pudding, and pie; you can spend your money on Black Friday sales and deals; or you can watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

It’s been a New York City tradition since 1924—sponsored by shopping destination, Macy’s—with thousands of people flocking to the streets to watch performers musically usher in decorated floats as giant balloons fly overhead. Above, you’ll see some moments from the spectacular street show from 1940, 1951, and 1988.

Community member @jodimeetdiana76 went to last year’s parade and shot the fantastic scene with her Diana Mini! Look at all the colorful characters against NYC’s skyscrapers! Kinda brings out the kid in you, doesn’t it? If you’ve been to a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, we’d love to see your photos! Share your stories in the comments below.
