Bulldogs from 1905 in Fancy Dress

Halloween is just around the corner and we're brainstorming cool costume ideas for all the ghastly weekend activities. We'll probably take cues from these cute canines from the 1900s, all dressed up and accessorized for some pretty poignant (and funny) large-format portraits!

I hope these adorable models got some well-deserved treats after the shoot because it’s hard to stay still for a photograph with a hat on your head and a pipe in your mouth—especially if you’re a dog! These puppy portraits from 1905 were produced by an unknown artist with a large format camera and 8 × 10 B&W negatives and was recently found in the archives of the Library of Congress.

The photos feature a white bulldog in various dressy ensembles from that era cut especially for four-legged friends. Wearing handsome coats and snazzy hats, this pup sure looks like it’s living in the lap of luxury. It even has us inspired to go as turn-of-the-century aristocrats for Halloween!

Do you have analogue photos of your pets in dress? We’d love to see them! :-)
