Melvin the Mini (Traveling Rube Goldberg) Machine

Putting a stamp on a postcard should be relatively easy, right? One must simply pick, lick, and stick. But for Melvin the Mini Machine, the task couldn't be more belabored--and amusing! This Rube Goldberg machine, which lives in suitcases, takes minutes to do it in a series of coordinated cause-and-effect chain reactions. Watch the video here!

Yesterday, we told you about “The Way Things Go”, a half-hour art film featuring a mammoth Rube Goldberg Machine, as well as the “Rube Goldberg Photobooth”. Simple tasks are made oh-so-complicated by very specific scientific measurements and highly creative object placements, with the burdensome process leading to a basic end result.

Melvin the Mini Machine specializes in unsimplifying a task (namely putting a stamp on a postcard) but it sure is a hoot to watch. The traveling Rube Goldberg machine is housed in two vintage suitcases that contain the elaborate mechanisms and includes a vinyl record player, marbles, tobacco pipes, and, of course, fire!

Melvin was brought to life by Dutch designers HEYHEYHEY after a clamor for their larger-than-life Rube Goldberg, Melvin the Magical Mixed Media Machine. Occupying huge floor space and requiring major logistics, the Mini Machine’s big brother even knows how to tweet!

We can’t get enough of this cool conceptual project and we’d love to see Lomographers’ versions of it too! Anyone up for the analogue Rube Goldberg challenge? ;-)
