The "Building of the Year" is From Singapore

The World Architecture Festival took place on the shores of Singapore last week, at the Marina Bay Sands. It was a venue to be inspired at. The two peaked domes that stood out on the horizon - the Cooled Conservatories - couldn't help but be noticed owing to their design and function. It's no wonder it took home the World Building of the Year!

The prestigious “World Building of the Year” award was bestowed on the Cooled Conservatories, designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, housed at the Gardens by the Bay, located by the Marina Bay, Singapore.

The green dome shaped vegetation is housed in the largest climate-controlled greenhouse on the face of this planet! There are two conservatories that make up this greenhouse. The first boasts a man-made waterfall and flora from the tropics, while the second houses blooming flowers from the Mediterranean. The domes are named Cloud Forest and Flower Dome respectively.

The conservatories are the centerpieces of the 54-hectare Bay South Garden, the first section to be complete of the Gardens by the Bay park project.

These environmental feats are recognized through virtue of their sustainable engineering and now, through the platform of the World Architecture Festival 2012, more people and architects might inform themselves and practice designing structures that use environmentally sustainable technologies.
