Inspired by Eadweard Muybridge and his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion and in motion-picture projection, artists Wendy Marvel and Mark Arnon Rosen designed and created mechanical flip books in 2011.
“Instead of a crank on the side, there’s a tiny motor that rotates the spindle and flexible cards flip by giving the illusion of moving pictures.” — About Mechanical Flipbook
Recently unveiled at the 2012 Maker Faire at the San Francisco Bay Area, Marvel and Rosen are now collaborating with manufacturing designer Steven Goldstein to conceptualize, produce, and distribute do-it-yourself versions of this beauty.
“The gallery-versions of their original mechanical flip-book artworks are expensive and are only available in limited editions. But the public response became so overwhelming that Wendy and Mark had to share this magical art format with as many people as possible.” – FlipBooKit Kickstarter page
While the gallery-versions contained images and illustrations made by Marvel and Rosen themselves, the DIY version would contain blank cards so the flipbook can showcase a story that is uniquely yours! In a way, it’s similar to our very own LomoKino, which was also inspired by the studies of Eadweard Muybridge! Cool, eh?
