World Expo Pavilions' New Lease on Life

In a press conference Tuesday it was announced by a representative of the government's cultural branch that the permanent pavilions at the site of the 2010 World Expo. are to be transformed into art museums that will be opened to the public come October!

The China Pavilion, pictured above, has an exhibition space of 70,000 square meters as is to become the permanent Shanghai Art Museum (上海美术馆) which is currently located in the former clubhouse building of the Shanghai Race Club.

The director and spokesperson of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and TV, said that with 27 exhibit halls the structure’s dimensions are close to the Musee d’Orsay in Paris. On top of collections from world-museums, the newly housed Shanghai Art Museum will host works by notable Chinese artists Guan Liang, Lin Fengmian (林風眠), Wu Guanzhong (吴冠中) and Cheng Shifa (程十髮).

Another pavilion, the Pavilion of the Future, will also gain a new lease on life as the “Power Station of Art” which will be the main exhibition space for the 9th Shanghai Biennial which is ongoing and will run till October 5, 2012.
