Spotted: Exakta Camera in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close features a young boy who documents his journey using his grandfather's old Exakta camera. Read on to find out about his Lomo walk!

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is one of last year’s top contenders for Best Picture during the 2011 Academy Awards. It’s based on the novel of the same title by Jonathan Sarfran Foer. It’s about a young boy’s quest to find meaning to an old key left by his father who died during the 9/11 attack.

The cast includes Tom Hanks (Thomas Schell), Sandra Bullock (Linda Schell), and Thomas Horn as the main protagonist (Oskar Schell) who has Asperger’s Syndrome.

Throughout his journey to find the lock where the old key belongs to, he brings along an Exakta camera (which belonged to his grandfather) to document all the people he had met along the way. Later on, he compiled all the pictures into a book and gave it the title Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

I missed the movie the first time around and just saw it. It's a wonderful movie. Being a photographer enthusiast and collector, I noticed the Exakta immediately. It was made famous in Jimmie Stewart movie, Rear Window. It wasn't a very good camera and oddly designed but 35mm changed the course of photography. Journalists gave up their bulky press cameras for the convenience of single lens refex compact cameras. I built my system around Nikon. I wondered if there was a tale concerning the choice of this camera in the movie. A Leica would have been a more appropriate choice. As for the movie - powerful, very powerful.
