At the Lomography Gallery Store Gramercy NYC on Thursday, July 12th, we met to celebrate one of the quieter moments in NYC: Manhattanhenge. This special sunset only happens twice a year, and being the Lomographers we are, we couldn't wait to photograph such a unique event!
What: Manhattanhenge, Sunset on 23rd Street
When: Thursday, July 12, 2012 @ 7:30pm
Where: 23rd Street (via the Lomography Gallery Store Gramercy)
Camera: L-CA+, La Sardina, and the Diana F+
Technique: Sunset Photography
Being in New York you get exposed to many interesting sights; some good, some bad, and some super amazingly beautiful that you have to round up a group of 30 or so trigger happy shutterbugs to go out and photograph it. The phenomenon that is now known as Manhattanhenge is the latter of the three. Twice a year the sun sets at just the right angle that it lines up perfectly with Manhattan’s grid system. This means that the sun sets perfectly in-between the buildings on Manhattan’s west side.
We gathered at the Gallery store in Gramercy for a crash course on the L-CA+, La Sardina, and the Diana F+. Once everyone got the hang of their cameras, we headed down 23rd St. to capture Manhattanhenge onto film. However, the clouds quickly became jealous of the sun and like a bratty child hoped in front of it to take up all the attention. Instead of feeding into the clouds’ neediness we photographed the hustle and bustle of Chelsea instead, which turned out to to be a great subject though a plastic lens.
All in all our Manhattanhenge workshop was a fun-filled venture, despite the clouds stealing our sunshine. We can only hope that next time around the clouds will take a step back andl let the sun shine bright like the star it is.
