Analogue Eyes 'Dwell on Design' at Los Angeles

Nearly 30,000 people flocked to the Los Angeles Convention Center back in June for a three-day jubilee of all things design-related. The annual "Dwell on Design" event is sponsored by Dwell Media, publishers of the popular glossy monthly publication, Dwell magazine. Check out my La Sardina photos!

The yearly Dwell on Design expo is not unlike an issue of the beloved design periodical itself, except it’s all in 3D. That is to say, imagine Dwell as an event, but instead of thumbing through pages of a magazine, you’re navigating a real-life maze full of features, reviews, contests, displays, roundups, highlights, sidebars, and more. Here’s what happened on June 22-24, 2012.

It’s the perfect opportunity to go back to basics and break out the film camera — in this case, it was a La Sardina El Capitan (minus the flash). The event is all indoors with fluorescent lighting, so film speed is anybody’s guess — but I used one roll of 100 and one roll of 400 ISO, almost always in B mode.

It can get pretty crowded, too, with tens of thousands of people pouring through the doors, so you’ll need to be quick with the snapping — not an easy task when you need to adjust the focus settings back and forth repeatedly.

In the end, though, it’s worth it, because the whole place practically oozes with creativity, and an analog camera is the perfect way to capture the wealth of visual stimuli. Whether it’s a sustainable prefab home, a revolving gazebo, a cleverly-designed air purifier, or striking home decor recycled from existing materials, you’ll be hard-pressed not to leave Dwell on Design very, very inspired.

El Capitan leads the way for the new La Sardina collection. With a red and yellow motif that screams authority over the Seven Seas, this 35mm wide-angle wonder commands attention both at sea and on land. Comes with Fritz the Blitz, Lomography’s most powerful flash ever. Sail the high seas with El Capitan, available in our Shop.
