Lana Del Rey plays the role of both Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy Onassis in her new video for the single “National Anthem." Directed by Anthony Mandler with help from 8mm videographer, Your Girl Chuck, the amazing vintage-style clip was inspired by the assassination of JFK, told from Jackie O.'s point of view.
Lana turns into a modern Jackie Kennedy, estranged wife of former American President John F. Kennedy. Her new videoclip is minimally designed, focusing in particular on images and scenography, just like a movie. This vintage videoclip, directed by Anthony Madler, is clearly inspired by the Super 8 filming technique popular in the 1960’s.
At the beginning of the videoclip, there is an intro in which Lana plays the role of Marilyn Monroe, singing the infamous “Happy Birthday” song to the President (played by rapper A$AP Rocky). This scene is very similar to the night of May 19, 1962, the 45th Birthday of JFK.
In the rest of the video, there are a lot of everyday life scenes featuring the “Kennedy” household like family breakfast, playing with kids in the garden, parties, and intimate moments. In the end, Lana/Jackie witnesses the death of her husband, and the scene is based on the actual Zapruder film of JFK’s assassination.
“National Anthem” was directed by Anthony Mandler with assistance from New York-based photographer and personal friend of Lana, Your Girl Chuck. In the above photo, she is seen with an 8mm movie camera and said after shooting that it was “amazing.”
