A Surprise Visit To The Lomography HQ by Apichatpong Weerasethakul

In the Lomography City Guide Vienna, we encourage Lomography enthusiasts to pop by our headquarters if they happen to be in the city. We were ecstatic when the person who showed up yesterday was Palme D’Or winning director Apichatpong Weerasethakul! Find out more about what he got up to with the Lomography Staff below.

Best known for his award winning Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) and with us Lomographers for Ashes, his recent short film shot almost entirely with the LomoKino, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, yesterday came by Lomography HQ for a Q&A session and a very intimate screening of Ashes.

Together with Lomography staff, Apichatpong, or Joey as his friends call him, discussed the wonderful experiences he had whilst shooting Ashes with the LomoKino. He described it as “very special” and “organic” – something which cannot be achieved when making a film with digital technology.

He went on to reveal how Ashes is so intricately a part of him. How, through shooting that which he found to be familiar he created a pool of memory and remembrance before bidding farewell to a past life. With that insight, the title Ashes became ridden with meaning all at once. Whilst the fireworks burn at the end of the feature, all that remains are ashes. All that remains for Joey are memories.
